Sjene is a conceptual work of art exploring the perception and the hidden possibilities of the relationship between space and light. In this light installation the artist experiments with symmetrical composition. Shadows cast by thin brass rods serve as the primary ‘material’ for a medium that oscillates between drawing and sculpture. The immaterial nature of light and shadow interacts with the substantial physical properties of metal but viewers are puzzled by a lack of clarity about cause and effect in terms of everyday physical experience. The artwork makes use of the seemingly somewhat mysterious phenomenon of two sources of light of different colours – one red, the other blue – which extinguish each other, making the wall appear white. Only the shadows form lines of colour because the sticks on the wall only block one of the two sources of light.
