GERGŐ KOVÁCH: Duck Hoax I-III (1998)
Beeswax sculpture
What is appearance and what is reality? Where, by whom or what is meaning conceived: inside or outside the object? These are some of the questions prompted by Kovách’s three-sculpture project. A unique feature of the ensemble is that the sculptures do not inform viewers as to what they actually see on display, thus the interpretation of reality is also difficult. The solution is only revealed by their shadows cast on the wall: the message hidden in concrete, organic-abstract forms can exclusively be decoded outside the objects and through light. An additional surprise in this semantic game is that the three sculptures are visually entirely different but their shadows are the same duck-silhouette. Even the final solution is dubious: is it ducks or a hoax we see on the wall?
Gergő Kovách’s (1974, Budapest) works are distinguished by a diversity of materials, themes and language, the latter including proverbs, folk elements, pop-cult clichés as well as art historical and social issues.
