Inspired by the ‘multiverse theory’, this continuously self-renewing audiovisual installation based on generative graphics and sounds examines the evolution of an infinite number of possible universes.
The multiverse is a – scientifically disputed – speculative theory in physics and cosmology that describes a system made up of an infinite number of universes existing in parallel with our space-time. According to the hypothesis of American theoretical physicist Lee Smolin, our universe is only one among the ever-increasing number of universes, each of which was born from a collapse following the formation of a black hole, leading to tiny modifications in certain parameters of physical laws. The number of modifications is further increased by the supposition, according to which those universes of the multiverse that have more than one black hole have additional offspring. It is this cosmological natural selection to which our universe owes its special characteristics. This means that the Earth came into being partly causally and partly as a result of the infinite evolution of other universes.
