ALAN JAMES BURNS: Augmented Body, Altered Mind, 2022
Collaborative, interactive installation
When you see someone else’s mental landscape projected onto the wall, does that mean you can see inside their head?
The interactive installation places viewers in an immersive audiovisual environment where they can influence the imagery of the artwork in real time through their own brainwaves. By donning the brain-computer interface, the EEG sensor, participants witness the brain activity of their nervous systems being transformed into fascinating amorphous visual signals projected onto the wall, evoking both environmental and neurological patterns.
The ever-changing patterns, accompanied by a multi-channel soundscape, provide a unique and deeply personal experience for each viewer, as their thoughts and attention directly influence the shapes and colours that ripple before them. The projection of one’s own brainwaves is not only visually appealing but also makes us aware of the subtle patterns in the relationship between the brain, the body and the environment. As viewers are shown a visual landscape of each other’s brain functions and confronted with their differences, they can reflect on how embracing neurodiversity and the practice of collective problem solving can help strengthen new approaches.
