Katinka Hajas’ sound and light installation “Wave” comes to life from the thin metal sheets and wooden planks that form its basis. The planks move the plate depending on the strength of the steps taken on them, and the light on the back of the metal plate scans the wall up and down, vibrating and changing shape depending on the movement.
Stepping on the plank can be placed into the same circle of thoughts as the individual’s search for a path; the visitor’s movement, any small gesture, appears magnified in the abstract play of light that organically spreads around them. No movement can be concealed from the artwork that reacts even to the slightest of motions, transforming the metal plate and the light that strikes its surface into a projection of the soul.
The meeting of the all-white surfaces and the projected light also removes the visitor from the world around them, to confront them with their own movements and actions in a hermetically sealed environment. Thus, the light focus becomes a hypothetical replica of the viewer and an observer of themselves.
The work of Katinka Hajas focuses on the sensitive expression and analogical visualisation of emotions and personal inner processes. An artist at home in a variety of media, she works with video, drawing and spatial installations, with a wide range of tools and a coherent visual language. Her creations are united by a desire to understand and analyse the details of the reality operating around her and within the individual.
