LORÁND SZÉCSÉNYI-NAGY: Solar Eclipse 2016
Interactive light installation slide film, LCD display panel, lens, reflector, electronics
The installation is an experiment in the interaction between analogue and digital images, in which an analogue projection of the Sun appears on a liquid crystal monitor panel that displays a constantly changing pattern. Approaching the LCD panel will result in an error signal in the form of dark, vibrating streaks. The pattern becomes increasingly dense to the point that the image of the Sun becomes entirely blotted out by blackness, creating a virtual solar eclipse.
The image that forms on the surface of the work is a fusion of two different media that merge into a single layer. The analogue depth of the slide film meets the countable resolution of the digital matrix grid. The LCD panel is not controlled by the usual interface, but rather, by bypassing it and directly activating the circuits controlling the liquid crystals. This way, what we see is not a preconfigured image, but the outcome of an experimentation process. These ever-changing patterns are errors with respect to the monitor’s function; however, in this case it is these very error signals that convey the work’s main message.
