FINNBOGI PÉTURSSON: Infra-Supra, 2014/2024
Installation
How does our brain react to inaudible, low-frequency vibrations?

In his installation, Icelandic artist Finnbogi Pétursson creates a meditative space with a special atmosphere. In a shallow pool occupying most of the space, there are three speakers that repeatedly emit 3-hertz sounds. Vibrated by the sound waves, the water surface begins to ripple in concentric circles. The shadow of the lights illuminating the water surface is cast onto the wall and the fluid swirl of the intersecting waves fills the space.

3-hertz sound waves are inaudible to the human ear, but their pulsation can still be felt in the space around us. Infra-Supra (a reference to the alternating negative (infra) and positive (supra) directions of the sine wave relative to zero) creates a space allowing the visitors to immerse themselves in the gentle swirl of ripples on the water surface and sound waves that can induce a meditative trance state.
