CHRISTIAN ANDERSSON: Soft Drink Stand, 2001
Installation
What stories lie beneath the surface of reality, where projected images seep through solid walls?

The installation explores the boundaries between reality, its perception and its representability. It consists of a slide projector projecting a quote from cult science fiction writer Philip K. Dick onto a freestanding white wall. The projected text describes the case of a man who witnesses the disintegration of a soft drink stand before his eyes, which eventually becomes a mere representation on a piece of paper. Interestingly, the mirror image of the text looms under the paint on the other side of the wall, creating the illusion that the projected text is penetrating the solid mass of the wall. This seemingly inexplicable phenomenon leads the viewer to question the nature of reality and its representation, blurring the boundaries between physical space and abstract concepts. This dream-like yet real experience offers a glimpse into a ‘third reality’, similar to the way dreams often defy logic and physical laws. The work creates a contemplative space where, as in dreams, the impossible becomes possible and the familiar is easily transformed into the unreal.
